Introduction to Backpacking 11/6
Are you interested in distance hiking but have questions about how to get started? Come check out this primer course about route planning and equipment selection.
Event has been postponed, rescheduled time to be determined
Backpacking has been a passion of mine since my Boy Scout days. As we head into the winter season the opportunities for more rucking and camping events increases, and through backpacking the two activities can be combined. The activity not only promotes physical fitness, but also critical thinking, personal discipline, and a decisive mindset crucial for capable leadership.
Where: Tom Bass Regional Park
When: 11/6/21 10:00AM-12:00PM*
*I will do a 6 mile (2 hour) ruck after the course on the park grounds; feel free to bring your ruck and join me if you have the time
Backpacking was ubiquitous where I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but is more obscure here in Texas where the opportunities to backpack are less common. I’ve run into more than one person who was intimidated by the hobby, so the purpose of this event is to break it down into manageable size. This seminar will show how I go about constructing, preparing for, and undertaking a multi-day outing. Attendees will leave knowing how to put together an outing of their own, and how to equip and prepare themselves for success.
-How Backpacking Works; Detailed Walkthrough of a Multi-Day Outing
-Route Planning; How to Select a Trail and Design the Hike
-Gear Selection; Optimizing Loadout for the Specific Route and Hiker
-Plan our next overnight APC backpacking event here in the Houston area
All who are interested in distance hiking should attend. Over the next year I will be hosting a number of 2-3 day backpacking events around Texas & beyond. I want to see APC involvement in these, but we must be sufficiently prepared for the outings to be successful. That means all of us acquiring the knowledge, physical fitness, and equipment needed to proceed, together.
